SBSH Grant Program
Running a business takes grit, heart, and more than a little juggling. We know it’s not easy—that’s why the Small Business Support Hub was created: to provide direct support that makes a real difference for real businesses.
In 2024, 42 companies were awarded direct grants to strengthen their operations with investments like:
- Tech upgrades – laptops, software
- Restaurant equipment – mixers, ovens, stoves, slicers
- Honey extractors
- Survey equipment
- Point of Sale systems
- Inventory
- Commercial coolers and prep tables
- Anti-fatigue mats for staff
- Shake and slushy machines
- High-efficiency printers and copiers
- Professional cameras and media equipment
- Training tools and bookkeeping software
- Display cases and greenhouse equipment
And much more. These investments helped businesses expand their offerings, improve efficiency, boost sales, and even create new ways to serve their communities.
This fall, another 40 companies will receive support through direct grants. Applications submitted this summer are being ranked now, with awards announced by October 1.
But here’s the great news: direct grants aren’t the only way SBSH can support your business. We’re here for the long game. Hundreds more businesses can still benefit through:
- One-on-one time with trusted business experts in law, HR, organizational design, marketing, strategy, and more.
- Coverage of certifications and training costs to upskill your team and elevate how you deliver products and services.
Whether you’re navigating growth, tackling challenges, or just trying to make the complex a little simpler, we’ve got your back.

One of our 1st round grant recipients
We’re thrilled to celebrate the growth of Northern Natives Plant Nursery (formerly Northern Natives Erosion Control), owned by Ken Kerkhof—one of our SBSH grant success stories from our first round of direct grants!
When asked about the impact of the direct grant, Ken didn’t hesitate: crucial, game-changer, a gift. Thanks to the funding, the nursery was able to invest in key tools like satellite internet, a commercial printer, trays and containers, and QuickBooks—some things made a real difference.
As Ken wisely puts it: “If we aren’t failing at some things, we aren't trying to succeed.” Not everything worked perfectly—but lessons came with the things that didn’t. That’s exactly what the SBSH grant was meant to do: help local businesses take smart risks, adapt, and grow.
With better tech and more reliable systems, Northern Natives is thriving. They’re soon be offering plants to the public via a plant stand (how cool is that?) in addition to selling wholesale to their larger clients. And they’re looking for a seed processing partner—someone who can clean, package, and return native seeds gathered from across the region. Know someone? Reach out!
Ken’s the real deal—and Northern Natives is a gem in our community. Let’s keep rooting (hehe) for our local businesses!
