Sault Ste. Marie, MI - Headwaters North SmartZone, in partnership with Lake Superior State University, announces the first event in its Innovations on the Rise series: “Innovations in Outdoor Recreation” featuring Joe Thiel, a nationally recognized entrepreneur, investor, and innovation leader dedicated to sustainable economic growth across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The event will take place on Tuesday, November 18, at 4:00 PM in the Considine Hall Atrium on the campus of Lake Superior State University.
Joe Thiel, CEO of Innovate Marquette SmartZone and Executive Director of Invent@NMU, has been instrumental in building one of the Upper Peninsula’s most dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystems. His work bridges startups, industry, and education, turning innovative ideas into real-world impact.
With a career spanning startups, global corporations, and public-private partnerships, Thiel has founded and led multiple companies, including Lockout Co., LecConnect LLC, and C&T Technologies LLC, developing patented technologies in energy, security, LED lighting, and wireless communication. His leadership has attracted millions in grants, venture capital, and private investment to Michigan’s innovation economy.
As Chair of ORIAN and an Advisory Board Member for the Michigan Outdoor Innovation Fund, Thiel is helping shape the future of outdoor recreation technology, leveraging Michigan’s natural assets to fuel sustainable innovation and new business opportunities.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
